DataMapper Help: Trouble understanding relationships.

Hello,
Please find relevant code/examples here
The current project uses Sinatra and DataMapper, and I'm having a hard time understanding how the relationships work. I've spent several hours today reading and rereading the associations documentation, and I think I'm missing the point... DB rookie here, so please excuse any incorrect nomenclature. There's something that I just don't grok about the different types of relationships. But, best guesses:

DataMapper Terminology

  • has n - Table A has multiple items from Table B
  • has 1 - Table A has exactly one match from Table B (but there could be more than one way Table B matches on Table A? This is why I think I need a has 1 below...)
  • belongs_to - Table A has a foreign key in Table B? (not sure I know what a foreign key is TBH)
  • has n, :things, :through => Resource - is this different than has n somehow? isn't it just Table A has n and Table B has n? (based on the active record type, I'd guess this is a many:many relationship?)
  • has n, :things, :through => :model - This one seems to be different too... what is this :through keyword about? Seems important.
Take the above linked example. The table of group types groups has a primary key id and a group name. In the my_animals table, I have a column for group_id. Then it's just a matter of joining the primary key in the groups table to the group_id.
For example (based on the DB in linked gist):
SELECT ma.id, ma.name, ma.details, g.name FROM my_animals ma JOIN groups g ON ma.group_id = g.id;
Which returns:
1|Fido|Likes yarn|pet ... 5|Killer|Likes raw steak|wild ... 9|Garfield|Likes yarn|extinct
But the only way I can come up with to do this with DataMapper is:
anmimals_with_groups = MyAnimals.all.map do |ma| { id: ma[:id], name: ma[:name], group: Group.get(ma[:group_id])[:name] } end
Based on watching my debug log, this requires a new SQL query for each item in my_animals, and if joining two tables that's two extra queries... In DataMapper parlance, what is this type of relationship called? has 1 doesn't seem to be correct as it created extra columns in the groups table. It was a few hours ago, but first attempt was something to the effect of:
# Create a "type" table class Type include DataMapper::Resource property :id, Serial property :name, String property :group_id, Integer belongs_to :my_animals end # Create a "group" table class Group include DataMapper::Resource property :id, Serial property :name, String belongs_to :type belongs_to :my_animals end # Create a "my_animals" table class MyAnimals include DataMapper::Resource property :id, Serial property :name, String property :details, Text # property :type_id, Integer has 1, :type # property :group_id, Integer has 1, :group end
This creates extra columns in my tables... so that's not going to work...
Would it be easier to just not use an ORM and write my SQL directly? DM is really nice because it handles all the creating of tables. But long term, what about changing schema? Populating data? Backing up/restoring the DB?
Right now for the actual site the workflow is:
  • bundle install
  • bundle exec shotgunfor dev or if it's live RACK_ENV=production bundle exec unicorn -l unix:/run/myapp/myapp.socket
  • sqlite3 db/myapp-production.sqlite < db/migrate/static_dump.sql
There's gotta be a way to tell DM to take the SQL dump and import it?
Should I be using Active Record? The choice was arbitrary, DM seemed to be easier to use, had better support, and integrated with more DBs (so when I upgrade to postgres in a year the move will be easy). Obviously biased article a, and seemingly unbiased article b is why DM was eventually settled on. The ability to support multiple DBs seems to be the only substantial reason to chose DM > AR.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
