How does Reddit fit into the history of American sex, if at all? Does perusing /sex and /gonewild affect your answer? Ooooooh, I like this question! It certainly fits into it, and now I'm considering adding something like that into my writing. What IS new in our modern age is the extent to which people talk about and see sex on a daily basis. Before, even when sex didn't have the same kind of taboos and restrictions as, say, in the Puritan or Victorian era, vehicles of communication didn't exist to spread certain views/tips/innovations etc. What's fantastic about sites like reddit is that they can be used as sexual forums. With the anonymity provided by sites like this, people aren't afraid to ask question--to compare their practices with others'--to get new ideas--to change their perspectives. We have an unprecedented freedom to come to our OWN views of sex, and that's a wonderful thing. You know, as long as tools like Santorum don't take over our government.
What are you wearing? Tweed coat with elbow patches. Just like every other professor. Duh.
Was performing sex back then similar to today's way of doing it? Rather hard to say--people in the past didn't really write about their sex lives in their diaries all that much. In fact, most people didn't really keep diaries until the 19th century, and then good old Victorianism kept their lips (and scribbling pens) tightly sealed. Historians generally feel, though, that sex is sex: we "moderns" didn't invent the thing, even though we think we liberated it. After all, the Kama Sutra is pretty old and it STILL gives us some pretty handy tips today. As for whether people in the past enjoyed sex as we do today, or thought of it in the same way as a recreational sport, sure they did--if it was within marriage. The diary of Virginia planter Landon Carter is a fave for historians. "I rogered my wife on the billiard table today," he wrote. "We were both much refreshed."
How did people have sex on the frontier? Most homesteads only had one room. Did people just bang in the presence of their children and other family members? What about in crowded slums and tenement buildings? There was certainly a lot less privacy. Usually, one-roomed apartments or houses had a blanket that was hung up between the rooms. For example, Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books talk about this. She helps her Dad build their log cabin-or rather, watches him do it--and notes that he put up a blanket to separate his and "Ma's" bed from the rest of the cabin. Depending on the privacy of the parents, they would have sex when the kids were not in the house, when they were asleep, or openly around them. As for tenement buildings, many urban reformists professed their disgust at entering these places and finding human beings rutting all over the place. Keep in mind, though, that the reformers were often religious Protestants and the tenement people Catholic Irish--and the two didn't get along. So take the descriptions with a grain of salt, but also recognize that those people wouldn't really have had much of another choice!
Is sex changing in any way? Will it be different in the future? I think that sex is always sex. A penis goes into a vagina (or other orifices, but we didn't invent those either). You give two human beings enough time alone together, and they'll probably figure out all the positions and toys that exist. I think that attitudes towards it are what have changed. And with attitudes, of course, come different approaches to sex. Is it more likely that the average American woman today has sex more often, in a greater variety of ways, and with a greater number of toys than the average woman in the Victorian period? Sure, because she doesn't have the social taboo against being sexual, whereas Victorian women were expected to be chaste and virtually asexual. But there were still plenty of women who were having crazy amounts of kinky sex in the Victorian era: prostitutes, for example, knew quite a few interesting tricks. Different in the future? Certainly. Because of drugs. Viagra has caused the Third Sexual Revolution. I think that experience-enhancing drugs could spell all sorts of changes for sex. Birth control was a drug that changes approaches to sex in vast ways. But will the penis go into the vagina (or other orifice) just as always? Yup.
You say that "the remedy for boys who masturbated too much was castration". Was there any specific value like more then once a day? I have a feeling most of male reddit users would be missing something. And at which point in time did it become more acceptable? Hahahaha I knew that one would get reddit's attention. Masturbation in GENERAL was considered bad. Not just "once a day" or "once a week"--you weren't supposed to do it at all. The idea was that it was unnatural, since you weren't using your sperm (people knew about that at this time, thanks to the Dutch dude with the microscope in the 18th century) for procreation. Masturbation was thought to actually cause mental retardation. The idea was that it made you anti-social, addicted to pleasure, and obsessed with your penis. This atrophied your physical and mental capacities and made you go insane. Doctors actually developed special suits of armor to prevent you from masturbating. Check this one out: http://knol.google.com/k/-/-/1ljdtojlp2x7b/0361mcorsets3.jpg.
>The idea was that it made you anti-social Could it be argued that the opposite is true? that having no sexual release could do more harm to a persons mental state? Sure--doctors were in two minds about this. Guys like Thomas Nichols wrote books that said exactly that: that sex was a necessary release, otherwise a person's body would atrophy in the same way it did without exercise. See, medical theorists thought of the body like a complex system of wired nerves. They were obsessed with discovering what kept the whole system in "balance." Guys like Sylvester Graham thought that in order to keep it healthy, it should be always kept calm: there should be NO stimulation at all. To Graham, this meant everything from excessive emotion to sex to spicy foods. That's why he invented the Graham cracker: it was supposed to be a healthy food that was so completely unexciting that it didn't stimulate any emotion or sexual impulse at all. Although many other theorists agreed with Nichols, that the body NEEDED stimulation of sorts to keep it healthy, the general consensus of the day was with Graham. Self control was thought to be the key to success, health, and morality.
As an American, what is the best way to get my girlfriend to have a threesome with her hot friend? As a American, I am so pleased that you are open to new experiments. Her hot friend must be a really sizzling slice of manhood if you're willing to post your attraction to him on reddit. Remember: this does NOT mean that you are gay. After all, you have a girlfriend! And chances are, she's totally down with a man-man-woman threesome, herself. If only my own boyfriend were this open, I would have a grand old time!
You seem to have a condescending streak when it comes to men. Is this a product of your research, I.E. constant exposure to horny dudes with less than subtle come-ons, or is it more of a personality trait? Do I indeed? I never really thought about that. I do not feel condescending to men--actually, I really enjoy men. Please tell me where you feel I was condescending, and I will try to answer your question honestly. I think that in part I enjoy a bit of healthy sarcasm, and I also am taking some of these comments with a grain of salt, knowing how redditors like to joke. I like to give back what I get.
You're a sex researcher, not a dating coach. Do you feel like how I (computer scientist) feel when I get asked to fix someone's computer? Haha, my brother is a computer scientist and I am perpetually bothering him about things as unrelated and pathetic as my TV remote. But truthfully, I rather enjoy when people ask me about that kind of thing, because as a teacher I am also a mentor to my students--and they actually ask me some pretty personal questions and request some pretty personal help.
Interesting views on gender. Hadn't even thought about the idea of race not being a biological category either. However, using the same reasoning, does "animal" or "human" exist as biological categories? It does, because species exist as biological categories. A human is a different species than, say, a chimp. We may have 99% similar DNA, but there is that basic, species separation. This means that if a human were to have sex with a chimp, the offspring would be infertile: like a horse and a donkey creating a mule. Similarly, sex is biological in that a man has a penis and a woman a vagina: two men can have sex as many times as they want, but will not produce a child. Gender, on the other hand, connotes associations with sex: ie whether women are more nurturing, less sexual, more peaceful, etcetc. These are socially determined associations. And race is now seen this way, too. Biologically, it does not exist: there IS no gene for "black" people versus "Asian" people. Studies have shown that the DNA of a black man's brother can hold many more genetic differences than the DNA of a white man. Race, then, is like gender: a social category based solely on skin color or associated facial features. Nowadays it is ludicrous to think that black haired people are intrinsically, biologically different from brown-haired people. Hopefully, the same will soon be said about people's thoughts on black versus brown versus white skin.
Have you ever found something in your research and thought, "Hmmm, I'd like to give that a go?" If so what was it? Oh, I like the fact that Landon Carter "rogered" his wife on the billiard table. That sounds fun. And I like some Native American harvest rituals, when people went out into the fields and had sex there to stimulate the fertility of the soil. But my fave? The Beltane Fires.
I'm scanning the Wiki article about the Beltane fires, and it sounds interesting- however, I don't see any explicit sexual references being made at all. What sources did you use? Funny that it doesn't mention it. Traditionally, because the Beltane Fires were fertility festivals, people would have sex then--often publicly, around the fires themselves. The hope was that the gods (this was a pagan ritual) would be pleased by the festival itself and would grant those who had sex a child.
Conversely have you ever found something in your research and been genuinely grossed out? Oh, sure. I don't get grossed out by the practices so much as potential unhygienic aspects--or just downright evil associations. Example: in 19th century New York, a whole gay subculture existed with a very complex "underworld" of meeting places. Certain benches at parks, certain cafeterias after a certain time, etc. And certain public restrooms became well-known areas for sex. That grossed me out because if public restrooms are bad NOW, how do you think they were in the 19th century? And another that has grossed me out has been all that I've learned about the ways slave masters forced their slaves to have sex: with each other or with them. One master wrote in a letter to his friend that his "breeding" policy was to put all his slaves between ages 15 and 40 in his barn, strip them naked, and leave them there overnight to see what came about in 9 months. That grossed me out on a fundamental moral level, obviously.
What category of study are you in, General social sci, history, psych or something else? Also, how do you feel about the Kinsey studies-Have they been helpful or a hindrance in your research? I'm an Americanist, and I do Social and Cultural History. My specific focus is Race and Gender studies. Kinsey studies have been fundamental for my research. They're still flawed, of course, but they were a watershed in changing American ideas about sex.
How has your academic path shaped your own sexual ideals? I grew up a Catholic conservative. Having studied sex--the fact that it stays the same but ideas about it change drastically depending on place and time--has most markedly changed my political ideas about it. If ideas about it, and about masculinity, femininity, homosexuality, etc, have changed so drastically over time, how can we make sweeping generalizations about it today? How can we suddenly decide that homosexuality is "wrong" and that homosexual marriage is against the fundamental tenets of marriage when other time periods thought homosexuality was the "truest" form of love, and when we have misinterpreted the initial purpose of marriage in the first place?
What was the original intended purpose? Nancy Cott writes that it was coverture--the protection and ultimate ownership of women, her property, dowry, etc. Her argument is that it was a legal means of making two people one, rather than of establishing a formal means of procreation.
Do you think it may have something to do with the fact that men "obsessing" over sex so much that they want to write about it can be viewed as creepy and lecherous, whereas women are viewed as delicate and refined, and so will be not become sullied by all the sex talk, because that's not what nice girls do? I think you may have a real point there. And I don't think that people would admit to that, but those ideas about male/female sexuality have been around for centuries, so it's likely that they have become someone ingrained in our psyches even though we claim to have been sexually liberated. Case in point: people joke about male gynecologists: do they just LOVE vaginas? Or are they simply doctors with a detached view of female organs, and a knowledge that they are fascinating parts of the human body? Those jokes, after all, aren't made about female gynecologists, not do I often hear them being made about female doctors of men's genitalia (I have blanked on the name).
>You know the old saying: "a man who has a lot of sex is a player, a woman who has a lot of sex is a whore." Do you think this is still true? I do think it is still considered to be true, for one major reason: society can't let it go all that easily, because a woman who has a lot of sex risks pregnancy, and all a man risks (sorry men, but it's true on a basic level) is paying child support. I think that society therefore still is wary of the notion of women having "too much" sex that might lead to "too many" babies.
How is American sex different from sex in other countries? Sex is sex and has been sex for the entirety of human history. No caveman wrote on the wall "I figured out something called a blowjob today, wife really liked it," but humans are an inventive species. We've probably been doing it the same way for a while, everywhere in the world. What I meant is that approaches to sex are very different in different countries. You need only see the movies that come out in France and Spain: SO MUCH male nakedness. Penises everywhere! American movies will show boobs, but they shy away at penises: we've always had different ideas about masculinity, in particular, than European countries. And just look at some Swedish commercials, for example. Nakedness, blatant sex references, and pretty steamy stuff that would shock American audiences.
Interesting. I knew about the upsuck theory from before but didn't connect the two. How did it work in practice though? Was it enough for a woman to claim it or did she have to prove it somehow? Is it known whether it was actually a frequently used law? Another good question. This was very tricky, since it got into the "he said/she said" arena. It was not a frequently used law for a number of reasons: first, divorce was generally frowned upon by Puritan society. And secondly, in order to prove it you had to be infertile. Therefore, you either had to hate your husband enough to blame it all on him and try to ditch him, or you had to be handy with birth control tactics in order to make sure you didn't conceive. Since birth control wasn't well-known at this time (and methods were cruel and unusual--or just plain stupid) this didn't happen much.
How do attitudes towards infidelity today differ from those in the past? Hmmmmm. Well, speaking of America only, I think that it is actually LESS accepted in society today. That said, recall that there was a huge sexual double standard for centuries: it was often OK for men to have sex with their slaves or visit brothels (partly due to the notion that men had natural, uncontrollable sexual urges that needed to be satiated lest they wreak rapine and pillage on society), but women were supposed to be chaste until marriage, and then only have sex with their husbands. For this reason, court records show that women who filed for divorce because men were committing adultery were rarely granted it. On the other hand, men who filed for divorce against cheating women were very OFTEN granted their wishes. Today, however, society generally isn't afraid to register its shock and disgust at infidelity with both sexes: it is often seen as major grounds for divorce for men and women. The very fact that divorce is more common today than before is related to society's intolerance of infidelity in marriage.
I had heard or read once that prostitutes on the frontier used coins as diaphragms. Is this accurate? I could Google search it but I'd rather not. Any other interesting facts such as that one that you could provide for us? Oooh, like it!! Hadn't heard that one. Prostitutes on the frontier usually used the following methods of contraception: 1.) the douche: they would take a syringe filled with varied substances, usually soap or sometimes vinegar, and pump out the sperm into a bucket 2.) the "old school" diaphragm with spermicide: they'd soak a sponge in vinegar and insert it into their vagina. Of course, it's a SPONGE, so that wasn't all that helpful, though the vinegar surely didn't make the sperm all that happy 3.) medical procedures: many had--or their pimps or madams had--doctors remove certain parts of their reproductive systems so they could no longer have children. This was relatively rare since it was dangerous but it happened 4.) they used the rhythm method, often using a string of colored beads: blue were okay days, yellow were fertile days, red were period days. They counted off the beads. Problem was, doctors disagreed on the fertile days, so sometimes they were having sex exactly when they were not supposed to.
How far back in history will you be researching? And, what's the most interesting thing you've discovered? Well, I'm just doing North American history, so I'm starting with the Spanish but predominantly emphasizing the British colonies and then the United States itself. But historians are some of the most despicable nerds in creation, so I absolutely read beyond my intended research just for fun. And that interest has led me as far back in time as possible. We're talking Neanderthal sex. The most interesting thing I have discovered.....hmmmm, that's a hard one. I think that pre-Enlightenment medical ideas about sex are fascinating because they are so drastically different than the views we hold today--or those that came right after. People thought that men and women were actually exactly the same--just inverted. Aristotle actually wrote that woman was man, turned inside out. They thought the clitoris was a penis, the ovaries were inverted testicles, the womb an inverted scrotum, etc. Only in the Enlightenment and then especially the 19th century did this idea of drastically different sexes come about. I also think it's funny that we speak today of men's "uncontrollable sexual urges" and the notion that they are way more sexual than women....and yet, before the Enlightenment, people said exactly the same thing about women. Women were seen to be the sexual fiends unable to control themselves, and men as the rational creatures who had to control them. Just think of the Salem Witch Trials--witches were women who were thought to be so insanely sexual they actually went to the Devil and said "human men aren't doing it for me, let's get it on in the woods."
Can I touch your hair? Goodness. Your username is just so apt.
We seem to fight a lot on what acceptable sexual behaviors are. Are we any less / more uptight then we were? Hmmmm....interpreting this as "white, Anglo Saxon society in the United States," it is less uptight than it was. But does this go for all the racial groups in America? For example, what about acceptable sexual behavior in slave societies, as opposed to African-American society today? And what about Native American society in the 16th century, and Modern American society? Here we are arguing about gay marriage when Native Americans in California had members of their tribes known as "berdache" who were publicly acknowledged to be gay. They were allowed to take husbands, dress in female clothing, and were often highly respected as having particular prophetic powers.
I have a couple of critiques with the racial paralleled you are drawing here. First of all, with regards to the Af-Am society being directly linked to slave societies, you must first define what constitutes "Af-Am". Because, from a governmental point of view, a person from Kenya, another person from Cuba, and still another 5th generation person from Alabama all fit the description of "Af-Am", but have radically different cultures to draw from, and may not even be affected by "slave culture". Second of all, would it be more accurate to compare "Native American" society from the 16th century to modern Latino culture, since Latinos are their direct descendants (along with being mixed in with Spanish/African elements)? Thanks. EDIT: Some grammar, but not all :) True--I think that when I wrote that quickly, I didn't take into account all the other societies/communities/races I could, for which I apologize. Of course, you are totally right: different countries of origin and different racial lineages complicate the story completely.
Is the progeny of a human and orangorang sterile like a mule? How fast can they peel bananas? I would imagine that, as it's a cross-species mating it would be. However, I am quite sure I have met several men and women who are living proof that humorangs exist and thrive. A number of them appear on public television from time to time, especially so-called "Reality-TV." They appear to peel bananas slightly faster than orangorangs, yet remarkably slower than humans. This is a sure way to pinpoint one at a party. If you know of someone of whom you are suspicious, I recommend giving them a banana and recording the results.
How many sexual partners have you had? PhDs don't have sex, we have research. And we don't have babies, we have books.
How can you talk about sex if you aren't doing it? The same way I can talk about slavery without doing it. I'm sorry, snarky remark--I do in fact have sex, but for the sake of my boyfriend who is an avid Redditor and I know is now stalking this post, I shall not answer your question.
Edit: Alright, just kidding; what is your book going to be called and when do you think it will be out? Ah, the eternal question. It will be the composite work of other research I am doing. Therefore, the book I am working on at the moment, and which will first be published (gods be good) is specifically concerned with interracial sex in American in the 18th and 19th centuries. This I hope to eventually expand into something greater. I usually save my titles until the very end--it's strange, but even for my articles it takes me about 6 months and two seconds to figure them out. 6 months of ignoring the title and writing the rest of the piece, and then 2 seconds of having finished it and finally decided. That said, any ideas?
Has the increased access to pornographic material changed the way people practice sex? You have all these teenagers with raging hormones that have unprecedented access to all this material. Is it shaping peoples approach to sex or how they conduct themselves when engaging in sex? I certainly think so. So as not to repeat myself, I direct you to my comment on this subject above. Put bluntly, I think porn teaches kids the wrong way to have sex. If a boy were to simply take porn tapes as his Sex Example, the first woman he had sex with would find herself atrociously disappointed, to say the least.
How did people originally figure out how to have sex? I know its instinctual but I don't think I would have known which parts go where it it wasn't for sex education in school. Was it just experimentation and the fact that it felt good that led people to keep doing it, and they taught their children how to do it? This is a question no one knows the answer to. Happily, at least ONE caveman did figure it out. It is most likely that it's a combination of instinct and education: nature and nurture, like everything else. Animals don't need sex education: they know where and when to put it. It's probable that, in the earliest stages of our evolution, we relied most heavily on instinct. Later on, however, as our brains developed and instinct came to be replaced with complex mental processes, we likely combined this with social training. We are social animals, after all, and we lived in tribes. I doubt that sex in Stone Age tribes was as private a procedure as it was in Victorian America. You probably figured out that all the grunting that your parents did in the corner of the tent had something to do with it.
What are orangorangs? Orangutans. Funny thing about writings of guys like Jefferson: spelling wasn't standardized until the 19th century. So even the leaders of our nation hadn't a clue how to spell some basic 5th grade spelling words. Try reading the 17th century merchant's diary I am transcribing right now. He can't even decide how to spell "there." "Theyre," "theire," "tere," etc.
I find this idea particularly interesting. Wasn't Jefferson in a romantic or sexual relationship with one of his slaves, Sally Hemmings? He was indeed said to be, though historians argue about the truth of it. I think the best book on this, which argues for overwhelming evidence in favor of the relationship, is Annette Gordon-Reed's "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy." Side-note: Sally Hemings is suspected to have been a "quadroon"--one fourth or even one eighth black. This means that she likely looked white, possibly with fair hair, though one account mentioned that she had light brown hair. Interesting to consider, isn't it?
What are the effects of porn on the American zeitgeist? Porn has always existed in America. Actually, the 18th century was infamous for it. "Dirty pictures" (apparently originating in France--America's favorite scapegoat for "dirty things") became increasingly prevalent as the Print Revolution took off in America. Of course, it's more prevalent than ever, nowadays, thanks to guys like Hugh Hefner and inventions like the internet. But I don't think that America in general has gotten over the taboo against porn, even now. Even now, it takes on connotations like "dirty" and "perverted" in the public realm, and people talk way more about curbing it than in reducing restrictions. A good or a bad thing? Hard to say.
I know you've said that the modern society hasn't invented anything. Sex is sex. But today, we seem to be very conscious about where we put our sexual organs and what other things reside there. We also know how to make every sexual activity clean and safe (well, at least most of them). I'm wondering how the attitudes toward oral/anal sex were different in the past with the terrible hygiene they had. Were there any special practices for cleanliness when partaking in said activities? This is a very interesting question, and one I confess I do not know the correct answer to. I'll try to the best of my ability. First of all, people weren't terribly concerned about hygiene in general. Germ theory, for example, wasn't known until relatively recently. So for that reason, I don't think that people would have associated certain sexual practices with disease and hygiene as we do today. After all, they didn't even brush their teeth! That said, some societies in certain time periods shaved themselves before intercourse--both men and women (ancient Egypt is an example). And prostitutes often cleansed themselves after sex to prevent the smell and mess of another man from disgusting her next partner, and also in an effort to prevent pregnancy. Oral and anal sex are things historians find difficultly locating in the records. It appears that oral sex was only performed by prostitutes--mentions of it often state something to the effect of "respectable women don't know what this is." And some Gold Rush diaries from Americans evidence total shock at French prostitutes in California who give them their first blow-jobs. Whether this is due to the fact that Americans generally did not practice oral sex, or whether the diary-writers simply hadn't had it before, is unknown.
Did you find anything about amish sex? How was native american sex life? Was it male dominant? 1.) I confess I do not know anything about Amish sex 2.) Hard question to answer, because so many tribes were so very different. In general, per-marital sex was not frowned upon as it was in English/American society. Furthermore, many tribes did not have official "marriage" traditions in the first place--they had something more like partnerships that could be dissolved rather easily by either sex. And, of course, many tribes practiced polygamy. What confuses historians is the fact that so much data contradicts itself. On the one hand, John Smith is shocked when a whole bunch of Indian women offer themselves to him--as, the explain to him, they have a right to do in their communities. On the other hand, Gold Rush migrants are shocked when they encounter Indians who say to them "hey, I want your horse and blanket, I'll give you a woman for them, she can be your wife, whatever." Historians explain these differences on the one hand by acknowledging different tribal practices, and on the other by emphasizing how much Indian societies changed after encounters with Europeans. Most importantly, women's statuses in Indian society significantly went down. Warriors suddenly became THE most important members of society. Hunters suddenly became THE providers, because now they were catering to European demands for furs. The subsequent fall in women's statuses surely contributed to the degradation of their sexual roles.
Thanks! So can you say that longer terms of peace correlate with (sexual) empowerment of women? I am wary of that generalization.....I think that it wasn't so much warfare as economic transformations that really changed the status of women--at least in the context of Native American societies. As for applying the broader comment, it appears, actually, that periods of warfare are more often watersheds of sexual empowerment/change. The Civil War effectively killed the Vivianne Leigh type of "southern belle;" WWI ushered in the Roaring 20s; WWII gave women unprecedented opportunities in the work force.
How did they prevent pregnancy from funsex back then? did they use the pull out method? They used a variety of methods throughout history, and were more or less informed based upon the country, time period, and whether they were urban or rural, upper, middle, or lower class. 1.) the "withdrawal" method, which, amusingly was mostly scorned by medical theorists who insisted that it caused "great and terrible pain" for the poor man. 2.) condoms, which were made out of pretty terrible materials. Not having rubber for many centuries, condoms were made out of animal pets, usually--which, of course are porous. Not good news. 3.) vaginal douche: using a syringe and a bucket of soapy water, women pumped the substance into their vaginas to try to wash out sperm. A dangerous method for obvious reasons 4.) the old-school diaphram: women soaked a sponge in vinegar and inserted it into their vagina. Also not very effective, but not too harmful except that I'm sure it prevented much enjoyable oral sex on the man's part 5.) the rhythm method, often using a string of beads with colors that indicated the days of fertility, the safe days for sex, and the days of one's period. Sometimes worked, but ideas about menstruation were usually incorrect, so half the time women were having sex at exactly the wrong time. 6.) Herbs: these were often used more as last-ditch attempts, if a woman got pregnant. A number of herbs were known to cause miscarriages--the problem is, they were mostly poisons, so could backfire and kill the woman or prevent future pregnancies.
