What is this?

Foreword One topic that has not really been discussed much has been the large group mechanic in HvZ. Most guides recommend a group of no more than 5-7 people, however I have had led groups upward of 45 people and have seen extreme success in it. This series will go over different tactics that have proven to be effective and built upon through 5 games of play and testing.
About Me: I am in the military in a Combat Support Occupational Specialty with 2 deployments including one combat tour. This experience has inspired me to form units that are similar to the military training that I am used to in organization, roles and tactics. Direct military tactics do not work, I have tried and failed miserably. You need to modify it for the environment you are playing in. cprice602 took over the group a couple games ago and has done great things as well. Rifleman Square Set Up


Generation Number - This is generation 3 of the Rough Riders. Utilized in November of 2014 till April of 2015 * Note: Generation 2 was an attempt to implement the Infantry Set into 3 different groups at the same time to complete 3 different objectives. If there is a significant amount of outreach for wanting to get more information about it, I can do so, however I would not recommend it.
Size – 32 to 44 persons. (Can be halved to 16 – 22 if necessary, but is less effective)
Function – Platoon Sized Element broken into 2 separate squads with a separate command element that are able to act independently of each other. The platoon can mass together creating the ultimate force for repelling and engaging zombie hordes and controlling objectives. Rigid in purpose and reliant on outside smaller groups to complete other objectives. Slow and methodical. Every member has a very specific role and is easy to train. No need to be selective in membership because there is a different role that anyone of any skill level and experience can fulfill.

Tactical Breakdown


The infantry set up was effective, however it has its limitations. First of all, it is very confusing and requires a lot of critical thinking from everyone in the group. Everyone in the group needs to be an expert in HvZ before joining or you you risk them being overwhelmed by too many choices and decisions. There were also too many decisions that needed to be made and communicated by the Squad Level to the subordinate levels. Simply put, the infantry set up is just too hard for the normal HvZ player base to use effectively. Can it be done? Absolutely, however it is hard to reproduce and it takes a very specific set of people to command it properly.
The next problem was that the infantry set up originally for the military which is fighting an enemy that was hundreds of meters away with weapons that reached hundreds of meters accurately. Also the enemy that we were fighting also has the same weapon capability as us. This is distinctly different than HvZ. We needed to develop a strategy that was designed strictly with what tools are available to HvZ. Furthermore, we needed to find a strategy that is designed for a force that has effective range of <50 feet against a force that is only able to use melee.
Upon thinking and trying to draw up different tactic ideas, it dawned on me that I have been trained on a strategy that is designed for exactly these parameters in the military. One of the skills that my MOS specializes in is Riot Control. In riot control, you use short range Non Lethal rounds with effective ranges of about 50 feet to disperse rioters that generally do not have ranged capabilities. In riot control, the commands are also clearly given and each member only needs to know a very limited amount of information to be a capable member in their role.

Due to a weird coincidence, I just happened to meet and become good friends with Travis Henry during the Spring 2014 game at Oklahoma State. He has a group named the ARA that accomplished the same goal that I wanted to achieve except with different tactics. Among the many lessons that I was able to learn from him, he demonstrated the extreme effectiveness of the blowgun volley and the roaming strike team. His strategy also emulated the rifleman square technique that the British used against the Zulu forces.

Due to the combined efforts of the RoughRiders and the ARA, we were able to design something that I feel is the pinnacle of HvZ large group tactics in regards to Zombie Horde dispersal and objective control. It is not going to be fast, however it is very methodical and very effective against large groups of zombies and hordes. This technique also lessens the necessity of quick decisions and each decision can be made based upon a specific circumstance with a very practiced response. Each member is only required to know a limited amount of information for their position and the roles can be explained in a much shorter time than the Infantry set up. This allows for a less strict recruitment scheme as well as the ability to reinforce the group with members later in the week when human numbers start diminishing.


Command Structure is the same as introduced in Part 1. However each member is tasked with a specific task that we call “classes”:
  • Scouts – (8 people) – Scouts are generally the fastest and lightest armed of the group. They are tasked with clearing the way for the main body and covering flanks in the engagements. They need to be quick and agile.
  • Riflemen – (8 people) – Riflemen make up the outer perimeter of the main body and protect the command element. They need to be steadfast and will be taking the brunt of the charges.
  • Heavy Gunners – (4-8 people) – Heavy gunners are the firepower of the group. They need to be able to expend the most ammo in the shortest amount of time. They also will need to have ample amount of ammo. Not expected to be quick or mobile.
  • Blowgunners – (4-8 people) – Blowgunners are the artillery of the group. They carry 4-5 foot blowguns and will expend their ammo at targets upwards of 125 feet away. They need to carry as many darts as possible that can be shot from their blowgun and a small side arm for close engagements.
  • Guardsmen – (4-8 people) – This is the versatile group that needs to be able to quickly fill in for any position that is needing assistance. They are assigned directly to the squad leaders or platoon leaders and will be tasked with whatever is needed at the time. Collecting Ammo, Refilling Clips, Carrying Objectives, Reinforcing, Protecting Leadership, Manning Radios, Helping with Signaling are just some tasks that they will find themselves doing in the group. These guys are the oil that ensures the machine works properly.

360 Security

360 Security will be where you are at for the majority of the missions. When you have taken over an objective, move to a 360. When you are surrounded by the zombies, move to a 360. When nothing is going on, move to a 360. When you are awaiting the next objective, move to a 360. When you are holding a break dancing contest inside of the zombie base because you decided to take it over and prove a point, move to a 360. You are not a mobile group able to cover large distances so let the other groups do that. You are an objective controller and a horde destroyer. Scavenger hunts just are not your thing. Deal with it and move on. The other groups gotta have some fun too. If there is no reason to move, then find a defensible position and just make a 360. They are safe, you can't be ambushed and you will live to take on the next objective that gets thrown your way by the Moderators. Maybe you can even distract the zombie horde to come to you and your smaller groups can win the mission while you have all the fun shooting zombies. I have mentioned the 360 on every guide so far and there is a good reason for that. It is very important. Also remember to modify it to match your terrain and use your natural barriers like we discussed in the last couple parts.
360 with Little Contact
Your riflemen will make up the very outer perimeter of the 360 and will maintain a continuous sector of fire ensuring the safety of the group. They can be substituted for guardsmen to give them breaks. In the inside of the circle will be the heavy gunners supporting the riflemen. They are not on the front line because they may have to be repositioned to help reinforce another location. Because of that, riflemen will remain static in their location the entire time no matter what is happening elsewhere to ensure that all flanks are covered.
In the inside of the 360 are the Blow Gunners. They will be firing at will at zombies that attempt to get close. They shouldn't waste their time on a group of less than 8 just because they don't pose any threat to the group. Scouts are resting in the center since they move the most when we move and will be moving a lot if we get contact later. Squad and Platoon Leadership will be in the center as well coordinating their next move as well as discussing what needs to be fixed/changed.

This is for when we get to late game or if it is still early game and they decide to try to take out the cocky group like what happened in one of our games when I trash talked more than usual. I don't want to give an exact number, but I wouldn't transition to this until you get 10 or so zed that are obviously looking for a fight. An important thing to understand in this tactic is that the most dangerous zombie horde is one that is given time to organize, able to get close before charging and has strong leadership. These are the tactics that we use to ensure that these 3 things are disrupted. If zombies start their rush from outside of blowgun range, then the charge will be staggered. Some zombies will be fast and will get there quickly and some will be slow and will get there way later. This will make it much easier for your heavies to pick them off as they come in. Also, many zombies will get demoralized if they see their front lines of a charge just get wiped out in front of them and will decide to not continue the charge and wait for a better opportunity.
Send both of the Scout groups to the outside of the formation and have them rotating around the outer perimeter. They are individual units that can strike small group of zombies if the team leader decides. They will run back to the main body if they get into trouble. They will have to cover their own 360 while moving and your it will take a lot of practice to ensure they are a cohesive team and safe. They are effective to use as bait as well to try to draw aggressive zombies to rush prematurely and are great at distracting and disrupting. They are also able to take out the zombie leadership if the zombies are not careful.
Blow gunners should be firing lots of darts at the zombies. Either at large groups of zombies or at specific zombie leadership. This will force the zombies to move outside of the blowgun range to plan or will distract and disrupt their planning. A technique that I like using is called a “volley”. All blow gunners will load up one or multiple darts. A target is selected and then they all fire at once with the commands “Ready, Aim, Fire!”. This is useful for aiming at a single target or group since it is much harder to dodge 8, 16, 24 or whatever darts coming in at once. Blowguns can be surprisingly accurate if practiced. 8 blow gunners all firing a 5 round volley at once is a sight to see.
Heavies will rotate around to wherever the masses of zombies are to reinforce the riflemen. If the zombies are spread out and completely encircling, then just spread out evenly. Squad Leaders should be focusing on ensuring that their guys are holding steady and that sectors are being watched. Call out targets and any special zombies that are on the field.
Platoon Sergeant should be rotating around the group and assisting the squad leaders where they need. Also, I like to run around pumping people up starting chants, patting backs, yelling taunts at the zombies and telling my guys stuff like “Time for that glorious death boys!” or “About time we have some fun!”. Platoon Sergeant should be the one keeping up the morale and keeping the troops blood thristy. Don't even let them think that they running or faltering is an option.
Specific counters to Zombie Tactics
  • Zombie Massing then charging: Move the Heavies to the bulk of the zombie charge and have the blowguns unleash hell upon the mass. Scouts should be on the sides of the mass trying to fire into the mass on their flanks and distracting the group.
  • Zombies Spread Thin: Blow gunners firing at will or at predetermined targets with volleys. Heavy Gunners positioned evenly. Scouts assaulting the weakest groups around the outside but careful to fall back to the center if the zombies turn the charge on them.
  • Double Helix: Wouldn't the OSU zombies want to know our tactics to stop their most popular strategy...
  • Double Fake Helix: This one is tricky, but I think we have a good plan as well.

Movement Techniques

The movement techniques are how you move your group from one location to another. Unlike the Infantry technique, there are no reasons to be quiet or try to conceal yourself. Imagine yourself as a Battalion of M1Abrams Tanks that is on the way to engage the enemy. Do you want to hide and avoid the zombies? Hell no. You want to let them know that you are coming and that you are coming for them! In my last group as PSG, we had a speaker system that we played as loud as we could while we were moving to let them know that we were on the way.
The Infantry Set up gave different movement techniques to give options for what to do upon contact with the enemy. You could group and assault, evade, pulse, flank, bound, engage or bait. In this group, there is only one option when the zombies get in the way. You move them out of the way and keep on going. M1Abrahms don't retreat and neither do we. Because of this mentality, you only need 2 movement formations: when in contact and when not in contact. When you are on the move and when you are making them move. We call them “Column formation” and “Stomp and Drag Formation”. Anytime a formation or movement is called, it is repeated by the entire group as loud as possible. This is to ensure that everyone heard the command and to let the zombies know that we are steady, motivated and not intimidated by zombies.

The Column Formation is for when you are moving to a location and a majority of the zombies are behind you, to the sides or are not present. To the front of the formation, is our 2 scout teams. Each one is clearing one side of the pathway for the main body. They are approximately 100 feet ahead of the main group, however their spacing is dependent on what the situation allows for. They need to be far enough ahead to trigger ambushes or alert of hordes with enough time for the main body to react, however close enough to where the main body can provide assistance if they are caught out of place. I generally want to have the most experienced players in the scout team and any human perks that you are able to get if your game allows because they are in the most danger.
Scout Team Leaders have a very tough job. They need to be ensuring that their guys are clearing the path correctly and safely, however they also need to glance backwards often to maintain signal with their Squad LeadePlatoon Sergeant. Because of the need to look backwards often, I have had some team leaders not clear and instead just instruct. I have also had some that insisted on clearing and having someone else entirely do the signaling for them. Each is perfectly fine and is based on preference.
In the main body, to the rear of the formation, is the Heavy Gunners. They are facing to the rear and walking backwards and I like having my guardsmen directing them and ensuring that they don't fall down. Since we are so loud and we are always wrecking havoc upon the zombies, we get trailed a lot. I want the zombies that are trailing us to be looking down the barrels of our biggest blasters with the highest rate of fire. Heavy gunners should be carrying a ton of ammo, so they should not be conserving ammo when zombies try to creep up onto the rear of the formation.
To the flanks of the formation are our Riflemen. They ensure no one sneaks up on the flanks and are able to respond to either the front of the rear of the formation if needed and set up in less than 5 seconds. They protect the main body so that we can coordinate everything while being very well protected.
Riflemen Team Leaders should make up the front of the main body. Always leading from example and from the front. They should be the person that their guys are emulating. Generally they won't be able to see exactly what is going on with their team, so they rely on their Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant to ensure that their guys are doing the right things.
Blow gunners are stationed inside of the main body and will be acting as artillery support to keep zombies at over 100 feet away from the group. When traveling, they will usually be facing to the rear to help the heavy gunners keep the trail zombies at a safe distance since they generally can not support the scout team very effectively since they are so far out. I purchased 1,000 whistler darts for the scout team for the Fall 2014 game and even after collecting them after each mission, we still ran out by the end of the week. I can't stress how many darts that these guys should have and how effective that they can be if they have the ammunition.
When traveling, Guardsmen will be doing whatever tasks need to be completed. I like to have a guardsmen walking with the Heavy Gunners and ensure that they are on line and not falling down. They can also help support any line that may need reinforced, carry objectives, help with communication, signaling the scout teams, refilling ammo, collecting ammo on the ground, adjusting gear, covering sectors when breaks are needed, passing out water, ect. They are the oil that ensures that the group runs smoothly. They are assigned to a squad or platoon level leader, however they should be assisting everyone.
Squad Leaders should be ensuring that their squads are doing the right thing and should be constantly correcting deficiencies. Complacency is the most dangerous part of the game and the squad leader is the one to combat that. The thing about this set up is that we are damn near impenetrable. Especially early game, so zombies just tend to ignore us and go for weaker groups until their numbers grow. Because of that, there are some missions, were we have very little zombie presence and laziness grows. Squad leaders need to manage that effectively. A viable option is to rotate people out. In an early game situation, you don't need everyone manning their post 24/7. Instead, only have half the people watching sectors and the other half rest in the center. Then switch out every 15 minutes or so. Another thing that Squad leaders should be doing is motivating their guys. I like having squad singing competitions or who can do chants the loudest or whatever. The point is that the game can be boring at some parts, so you should be trying to make it more fun and also ensuring that your guys are safe in the process.
Platoon Sergeant should be carefully monitoring the situation that is unfolding and adjusting. I also like directly signaling the scout team and am constantly looking every direction. As Platoon Sergeant, I don't have a job if everything is working perfectly, so I often times will move to the outside and talk with a new member and ask them how they think things are going and seeing their perspective on the game or any ideas that they may have. I may also tell jokes or whatever else can keep up morale. Also, since we are having many new guys, I often times will be helping positioning them and demonstrating what they should be doing in some moments. If the group isn't being aggressive enough, I have been known to get in way in front of the formation to shoot zombies (and occasionally get tagged) just to teach them to be more aggressive and not to fear death like new players generally do. I also taunt the zombies a lot but try to ensure that it is friendly and not “mean”. (However I have also been criticized for it as well. Be careful with that one)
Platoon Leader is making the objective decisions of the group. He is on the radio, Facebook, checking emails, monitoring phones, texts, group mes, what's apps, and everything else that the human race could possibly use to communicate with to formulate a plan for the group to accomplish. Once he decides on an objective, he tells the Platoon Sergeant. “We need to be _____ to accomplish ___, by __ because _______”. Platoon Sergeant then formulates a plan and executes the task that is given by the Platoon Leader. If the plan isn't possible, then the PSG and PL decide on a secondary course of action and then the PL sends out what we are going to do to the human race. He also communicates with the human race with any important information that we can tell them. For example, if we have 40 zombies following us and then they all decide to run off in another direction, then that is important. I also like the PL to be keeping track of the entire Human Race's mission objectives to know what is needed so that other groups can contact him to let him know when an objective is done and he can also help other groups decide what they can be doing to help. Teamwork is key since we are not built for speed.

Personal Experiences on Out of Combat Movement

Complacency is key here. 98 percent of the time, you will be in this formation when you are moving because there isn't shit going on. People will also think that because they are in the M1Abrahms tank, that they are safe so they don't need to be so vigilant. They fail to realize that the reason why the tank is so safe is BECAUSE they are vigilant. I have seen whole sides getting wiped out from a very small number of zombies simply because the whole group got complacent because the last 2 missions were boring and nothing happened.
Another thing that I would recommend is for your guys to do a weapons check every once in a while. Since usually nothing is going on, find a safe area and have target practice on someone in the center. Have them unload an entire clip as fast as they can just to get used to it. I have been in too many engagements where I have expended three times as many darts as anyone else in the group when I have a slam fire blaster and I am supposed to be “out of combat”. All those crazy expensive blasters don't mean crap if you don't squeeze the trigger. It happens way more often than I want to admit.
Another idea to do when it is boring is to tell stories. You can tell the story, or open it up to the floor. It helps build camaraderie and helps pass the time and keeps up morale. When morale drops, it isn't that uncommon for people to decide to just go and hunt zombies and leave the group. It is rare, but it does happen and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Encourage them to stay, but the goal is for them to enjoy the game even if it means outside of your group. No big deal.

Actions on Contact

So now you have reached a horde that thinks that they can take you on or they are on top of an objective that you need to control. If it is a small amount of zombies that you are confident that the scouts can clear safely and control the objective, then just do that. If there is a 1% chance of taking casualties, then move to the next technique. This is also assuming that it is not out in the open where the zombies can surround you. If that is the case, then just slowly maneuver the 360 formation to where you need to move to. This is used whenever you are between 2 barriers on each side like a buildings, bush lines, fences, out of play areas, ect. Do not attempt this out in the open. Another thing to take note of is if it is actually necessary to take the objective. Is there a distinct reason for moving? If not, then stay in your 360 until given a valid reason to move. Pride and arrogance will get you and/or your group killed so don't take unnecessary risks.

Stomp and Drag Formation

When you call this formation, the first thing that happens is the entire group repeats your command. Once they repeat it, say “MOVE!” Riflemen will move towards the side of the formation where the zombies are and extend out to the end of the pathway to ensure that no one can flank them from the sides. The scouts will move to the rear of the formation where the least amount of contact is. The scouts will now assume the rear security for this entire movement. Heavy Gunners will line up directly in between the riflemen and cover any gaps in the coverage. Guardsmen can be positioned as riflemen in the front to help reinforce and cover any gaps in coverage. Blowguns are free to move around in the center of the main body with the Squad Leaders and Platoon Leadership. Additional free guardsmen will assist wherever is needed.
Stomp and Drag Formation
EVERY SINGLE COMMAND THAT IS GIVEN WILL BE REPEATED FIRST BY THE GROUP AND THEN EXECUTED ON A SECOND COMMAND FROM THE PLATOON SERGEANT! Is that clear enough? No one will do anything without being told to do it. Also every single command will be said and repeated very loudly by everyone. Regardless of position.
This is where the Riot Control moves come into place. Instead of having shields, we have riflemen that make an impenetrable wall. Instead of Non Lethal shotguns, we have heavy gunners. Instead of Riot gas, we have blow gunners helping to disperse and weaken the group.
Your group needs to emulate this.
In riot control there are a few key fundamentals. First off, any ground that you take, you never give back. We are always moving forward. May be very slow, but always forward. Second thing, intimidation is huge. You want to show that you are in unison and disciplined. You don't want to show any weak points or falter. Third thing is that you want to be LOUD and overemphasize your actions. Tell them that you what you are going to do and you will be surprised with how many just let you do it and walk away thinking that it is a waste of time trying to resist. Just the sight of this will make zombies have second thoughts. Once we start our movements, they will just do what we want.
Movement from Stomp and Drag
Stomp and Drag movements will be systematic and direct. If you want the group to move 5 steps forward, then the PSG will say “5 steps forward!”. Everyone will repeat “5 steps forward!”. PSG will then say “Move!”. Everyone will start on their left foot and count every time that their right foot hits the ground. The entire group will say in unison every time their right foot hits the ground “1...2..3..4..5.. Hooah!” On Hooah, everyone will stomp their right foot down and emphasize the hooah.
You can also call out specific locations that you are going to move to or just say “Forward”. For example a tree: “Move to the Tree!”. Platoon Repeats. “Move!”. Instead of a count, the group will say STOMP on their left foot and DRAG on their right. Obviously, they will actually stomp and drag their feet accordingly. Once you reach the destination, the Platoon Sergeant will call “Group” on the left foot and then “Halt” on the second left foot. Group says HOOAH! On the right foot after “Halt”. No repeating on the halt command.
You will continue moving to the objective until you reach it slowly and methodically. As soon as you take it, transition into a 360 and await further instructions from the PL.

Formations from the Stomp and Drag

Similar to the echelon in part 2. Just call the formation, they will repeat it and then they will slowly move forward to the proper location. Ensure to keep it tight and at the 45 degree angle. The riot control video shows this done pretty well. This is if you come to a pathway ending but only one side is a dangerzone.

Similar to the wedge in part 2. The Team Leaders will move forward and the group will fall in behind like a normal wedge. This is good when you come to the end of a pathway and both corners are covered and you don't know if there are zombies behind you. Very dangerous situation.

Say you start your stomp and drag towards one group, however you realize that the front of your formation was just a decoy and instead they were sending zombies behind you to flank your “weak” scouts. Have no fear! Counter-column is a way to completely flip your formation to face the other way.
Steps: Call the command “Counter Column Heavies!” they repeat and then you say “Move!” All heavy gunners then quickly run right behind the scouts and take a position facing the opposite direction. Then do the same for “Counter Column Scouts!”. They then run towards the riflemen and take their position. Once the scouts have taken the position of the riflemen, then the riflemen automatically turn around and take the position in front of the heavies like the scouts were originally. The squads are reversed, however that can be adjusted later when out of combat.

Personal Experiences on Stomp and Drag Movement

Zombies are going to make fun of you if you use it. I guarantee it. Why? Because it is slow, they think it is funny and most importantly, they don't want you to do it anymore because it is a really tough sucker to break! It will demoralize the zombies so fast and moderators will be rushing to find a way to break it. It is only able to be used it a limited amount of situations, but it is extremely effective if you have the all the pieces working together and you have a very loud and intimidating group.
This is how we are able to take on groups much larger than our own. If they all came at us as a group and without hesitation, then we would probably be crushed, but the fact is that many won't. If you preach that this is invincible, you practice to train it to be invincible, your troops believe it to be invincible, the zombies will believe it to be invincible and you will be invincible. It is a self fulfilling prophecy.


Pros - Able to take on hordes effectively. Very good at what it is designed for. Easy to teach and easy to replicate. Not much information to grasp. Class roles limits the scope that the individual player needs to learn. Different classes for any Play Style. Plug and Play System. Able to recruit late game and still have those guys work in the system.
Cons – Reliant on other groups to complete other objectives. Slow. Will probably get made fun of because they are jelly. Slow. Moderators will probably hate you for breaking their game. Slow. Memes will probably be made. Slow. Zombies will probably just avoid you early game so it will be boring for some missions. Also, the group is pretty slow if that hasn't been said yet.
Overall - Yes, it is a slow group, however the power it can produce and the ability to completely take over a game can not be overstated. You have the ability to sit in the open and just let zombies come at you until you run out of ammo. It is just insane what power this can have if it is done right. Complacency will probably be your biggest weakness, however you can mitigate it with proper morale boosters. This is pretty easy to replicate at other games and doesn't take a tremendous time to learn. You can also recruit anyone and they can choose which role that they feel that they will fit best in. Rarely have I had to tell people that they can't be in a certain role so everyone is generally happy that they can choose. I would really try to go for the full size, but it can be halved if needed.
